Our technology approach is founded on the premise that our customers want access to independent expertise, somebody to take responsibility for the integrity of the overall solution, and an approach to technology change that is geared towards long-term viability and value.

Independence and flexibility

We work with our customers’ established technology investments and vendor relationships, or, where appropriate, we investigate and recommend technologies to meet the customer’s requirements and business objectives. Our customers rely on us for independent advice, so our focus is exclusively on technology solutions that provide the best outcome for them. Our vendor-agnostic approach exposes our people to a broad and constantly changing mix of technologies, requiring continuous learning, adaptability and creativity. This helps us to attract and retain the best minds in the industry.

Whole-of-system responsibility

We mitigate the cost, complexity and business risk that can arise in a multi-vendor environment by taking responsibility for the overall solution — from architecture, development and integration through to ongoing support. We develop deep knowledge of best practices and pitfalls in every technology we use, from hardware to COTS software components. We then proactively manage both the solution and its constituent technologies on an ongoing basis. When technical problems occur, we avoid finger pointing by focusing on the solution. We provide workarounds without regard for who is at fault; we investigate the root cause with the customer; and we work closely with third-party vendors to agree the approach and timing of fixes.

Strategic approach to technology change

As technologists, it is critical for Unico to keep abreast of new developments as standards emerge and mature, and as product vendors adapt their offerings. At the same time, we know that technology is an enabler for business, not an end in itself. In a rapidly changing technology environment, we use the following best practices to ensure that customers extract long-term value from every solution:

• Deliver high priority outcomes early by taking a staged approach that leverages existing technology assets
• Maintain technical integrity and reduce risk by minimising architectural dependence on specific vendors, products, protocols and platforms
• Improve business flexibility, cost and time-to-market by designing around robust, modular, interoperable and reusable components
• Maintain business agility and in-service performance by allowing business rules to be configured and software to be upgraded without service interruption

It is testament to our approach that the first systems we developed, which are almost as old as the company itself, are still delivering significant profits to their owners.
